FAQ

Question by too fast 4 u 123:
Can an nba team draft a player coming out in next years draft the year before?

Like larry bird. For example could a team of drafted john wall in the 2009 nba draft because they knew he was coming out in the 2010 draft. Its kindof a stupid question but i always wondered if a team could, is that rule still in place.

no…they can’t…

but usually euro players stay in europe for an extra year or 2 to pollish their game…so essentially they DO draft for the future but you have to be playing some kind of professional basketball ie: rubio and cleveland’s first pick…christian eyanga

    I dont think so.

No not anymore. I don’t remember the exact year but they stopped that shortly after Bird for college players. You can still draft a player from overseas and hold their rights until they are ready to come over.

  3. Mr. T says:

well the rule says that u have to be 1 year removed from high school to get drafted. So an NBA team can draft a player from Europe but the player doesnt have to play until they want to

No, the current rules don’t allow for “junior eligible” picks.

Fora junior to be selected, the player must first declare his eligibility for the draft. If this declaration is not withdrawn by a certain date, he forfeits his remaining college eligibility.

  5. jeff says:

the reason bird was a junior eligible was because he should have been out of college already he went to indiana and dropped out and didn’t go back to indiana state for a year so his original class graduated the year he was drafted. in those days a player had to declare financial hardship to enter the draft early. im not sure if the rule is still in place but with guys being 1 and done and so few nba caliber players going 4 years in college it hasn’t really been an issue.so now if a player declares for the draft he must be out of hs 1 year and must either stay in the draft or remove himself before a certain date. so to answer your question no that cant happen.

No, if that was possible, then Lebron James would be a Houston Rocket.
